Autonomous mowing was entering the residential market, but existing products often looked either overly industrial or toy-like. Working closely with engineering and robotics teams at Toro, I developed the industrial design language for a new autonomous mower platform that balanced technical capability with an approachable presence while accommodating a rapidly evolving hardware package.
Autonomous mowing technology was becoming increasingly capable, but the products entering the market often communicated the wrong message. Many competitors leaned heavily into aggressive industrial styling, while others appeared playful or toy-like. The opportunity was to establish a visual language that communicated intelligence, durability, and confidence; qualities homeowners could immediately recognize and trust.
The exterior architecture evolved alongside an active robotics program. As cameras, sensors, batteries, and internal components changed throughout development, the design needed to remain adaptable without compromising its visual identity. Close collaboration with engineering ensured the product maintained clean proportions while meeting functional and manufacturing requirements.
Every visible component was designed to reinforce the overall character of the mower. Material transitions, wheel architecture, surface development, and proportion all worked together to communicate capability without appearing intimidating. Small decisions throughout the product created a cohesive design language that balanced performance, durability, and approachability.
